Alcohol Spiritual Connection
Alcohol and Spiritual Connection
Many, even religious, people consume alcohol without a second thought of what it is doing to them physically or spiritually. We drink socially, to relax, to have fun, but how does it effect our connection to the Holy Spirit? In my experience, as a recovering alcoholic, I've found that I hear God more clearly when I haven't partaken in drugs or alcohol, especially for a long period of time. In my opinion, staying away from alcohol brings you closer to God. Here is why:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)
I researched "Debauchery", it means to indulged in sexual acts, alcohol consumption, smoking and drug use. I'm sure we can all agree that drinking is a stepping stone to sinning. Not that drinking is a sin itself, but it leads us to do irrational and regretful things. I'm sure you can remember a time you woke up from a night of drinking and felt shame and remorse for what happened. The first thing you have to remember is God always forgives and loves you, and second learn and grow from your mistakes. That's what we are supposed to do as Christians. Maybe you'll come to the conclusion that partying or even partaking once in awhile isn't right for you.
Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for the drunkards and gluttons become poor...
Proverbs 23:20-21 (NIV)
Have you ever felt like you were not only poor physically but spiritually too? The Lord literally separates himself from us when we drink. Our connection to him starts to slip away. When we are deep in addiction of any kind; food, alcohol, drugs, God takes a back seat and watches over us but keeps a safe distance. Leaving us feeling empty, like he isn't there anymore, like we are alone. I have felt that feeling too many times. I never want to go back to how I was.
Becoming Christian saved my life. Now I have morals and I spend my days in Gods word. Learning and educating myself about Jesus and what's right and wrong. I've made a lot of mistakes but I know the Lord forgives me and loves me. I'm here to tell you He loves you too! HE FORGIVES YOU!
...Lead us not to temptation, But deliver us from evil...
Matthew 6:13
God doesn't lead us into temptation (James 1:13-14) but he helps us and gives us chances to break free from our issues. Whether its sugar, television, alcohol or drugs. everyone has a vise and God is with you. You just have to ask for help. He's ALWAYS with you.
